Our Story:
Roti Food Bank was founded with a clear mission: to combat hunger and ensure no one in our community goes to bed hungry. On September 6, 2024, we began our journey, delivering food to families in need across our communities in Durham Region, guided by the core values of compassion, dignity, and accessibility. We took a unique approach by adopting a delivery-based model, which eliminates transportation barriers and protects the privacy of our recipients. By delivering meals directly to families’ doorsteps, we remove the stigma often associated with visiting a food bank and maintain the dignity of those who receive help.
Our food bank is open to residents of all communities across Durham Region, including Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby, and beyond all surrounding community areas.
Rozi Roti is a phrase that holds deep meaning in many South Asian cultures, particularly in the context of food and sustenance. It translates roughly to “our daily bread,” or more broadly, “the means to live” — the essential resources that nourish and sustain us. In a larger sense, it speaks to the daily struggle of families to secure the basic necessities of life: food, shelter, and care.
But our mission goes beyond food distribution. We view our work as Sadaqah Jariyah—a continuous charity that keeps giving, long after the moment of generosity. Inspired by the profound hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “The best of you are those who bring the most benefit to humanity,” we strive to serve as a source of ongoing relief, hope and empowerment.
